Hierarchies: Seeing The Whole

$210.00

10 Week Class Jan 7 to March 11. 9:00 am to Noon
Advanced Painting

Working first from floral still life and then from landscape photos, the class will practice perceiving the composition as a series of shapes, each relating to the whole by way of its place in a hierarchy.
Focusing on hierarchy of tone, color and edge creates a painting with gestalt: an organized whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts. It allows an artist to understand any subject as an abstract construct and not as "things" one is trying to illustrate.
There will be a slideshow demonstrating how other artists have used hierarchies in different ways. The last class will be an appreciation critique where we will look at and talk about all the paintings from the class.
