Join me for the first in an ongoing series of classes designed to sharpen your observation skills and strengthen your compositions by making them simpler. We’ll work both outdoors in the landscape and in the studio from floral still life. Oil and acrylic painters are welcome.
At its core, painting is about learning to see. As you look more closely, patterns and relationships start to emerge, helping you understand what matters most in a composition and what is superfluous. In other words, helping you to simplify, and see the essence. This class will be work on expressing the hierarchies of values and chroma in order to make your compositions simpler and stronger.
We’ll start with brief introductions, followed by a short slideshow, and then jump into a still life painting session. The final class will be a supportive critique where we look at everyone’s work. Handouts included.
I’ve been teaching painting for over 20 years and my goal isn’t to teach a particular style, but to help you develop your own—by strengthening your observation skills, gaining mastery of your materials, and confidently expressing what you find most compelling.

"When the artist is alive in any person, whatever their kind of work may be, they become inventive, searching, daring, self-expressing creatures. They become interesting to other people. They disturb, upset, enlighten, and they open ways for a better understanding. Where those who are not artists are trying to close the book, they open it, showing there are still more pages possible" - Robert Henri
